What exactly is plaster of Paris and what does it have to do with Paris?

Plaster of Paris is best known as the white substance used to cast things. It is actually a sort of gypsum plaster, created by heating gypsum, grinding it to powder and later rehydrating it.

The plaster was not invented in Paris and can be dated back to Anatolia and Syria 9Ka. It is named so for the abundant gypsum deposits at Montmartre, Paris.
